Approximately 60 per cent of people with memory problems eventually become confused and get lost. Safely Home is a nationwide program that was developed by the Alzheimer Society of Canada in partnership with the RCMP. The program gives added security to people with memory loss at risk of leaving home, becoming confused and getting lost. Safely Home assists police in finding the person who is lost and safely returning the person home. Even if a person has never become lost before, the Alzheimer Society encourages people to be prepared and participate in Safely Home.

Who should be enrolled in Safely Home?
Ask yourself:
If the person was alone and disorientated, would they be able to communicate who they are and where they live? If the answer is no, please enrol in Safely Home today.
Are you experiencing the early stages of memory loss?
Are you concerned about the risk of becoming lost in the future?
Please consider enrolling in Safely Home for the peace of mind of being prepared.

When a person is registered, vital personal information (similar to what is recorded in a missing persons report) is stored on a confidential police database. This information includes any locations where the individual is likely to go. Registrants receive an ID card and bracelet which identifies them by first name and their Safely Home registration number and says "Memory Loss -- Call Police". Safely Home also provides information and helpful strategies to prevent someone from becoming lost.

The Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce, OPP Emergency Response Team and local police officers hope that family members take seriously the risk of a loved one becoming lost. Research shows that if a person with Alzheimer Disease is not found within 12 hours there is a 50% chance that he or she will be found injured or dead. A missing person with memory loss is therefore a high priority for police, every search being treated as a life or death emergency. Being enrolled in Safely Home will certainly speed up the search process.

Safely Home enrolment has a one time charge of $35. Veterans are exempt from the fee. People can register themselves or a loved one. A free photo session for Safely Home registrants can be arranged at the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce office in Owen Sound. A recent photo is an important aide in any search for a missing person.
